Matteo Thun
Matteo Thun was born in Bolzano in 1952 and studied first at the Salzburg Academy and then at the University of Florence where he graduated in architecture in 1975. In 1978 he moved to Milan, where his meeting with Ettore Sottsass began a fruitful collaboration. At the beginning of the 80's, together with other important figures, he founded the Memphis group, a design movement that influenced the culture of that period.In 1982 he obtained the chair of industrial design and ceramics at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, left Memphis and in 1984 founded Studio Matteo Thun. Between 1990 and 1993 he was creative director of Swatch.
Thun has received many awards throughout his career: three times the Compasso d'Oro, the Good Design Award in 2011, the WallPaper Design Award 2010, as well as several awards in the field of architecture for the hotels Side Hotel in Hamburg, the mountain refuge Vigilius and the Radisson SAS in Frankfurt. In 2004 Matteo Thun was admitted to the Interior Hall of Fame in New York and is a member of the Royal Association of British Architects.
